After turning it on, I suddenly noticed that a pod of whales had come to our apartment. Only it wasn't a pod of whales, it was the microwave.

I'm pretty sure there is something seriously wrong with the microwave, since most appliances aren't supposed to sound like aquatic mammals. We've known for a while that our microwave has problems and is possibly making us sterile, but this is the first time it's tried to communicate.

We figure the microwave irradiated itself long enough to gain sentience. Our next task is to try to understand it well enough to communicate back. I'm going to watch Finding Nemo to brush up on my whale.

heat? yay!

--- I tried to post this three days ago, but the blog was broken. ---

Today, our apartment heating system turned on for the first time this season. Matchstick men:
About a con artist who has severe OCD. very funny but not a comedy:P watch it!
2.) Rules of Attraction:
About people in college trying to find what it "all means" through relationships. Sound familiar? It a really neat movie with cool camera techniques to get the point across during the movie. I would say if you want a movie to that makes feel better cause other people have it worse then you watch this movie.
3.) The usual suspects:
Movie was a good a movie if you want a nice action/Drama flick. I kept trying to guess who was behind it all try to piece it together. Really good. Classic 1990's film that I think that if you a bored check it out.

Out of all the movie I found my self guessing. Trying to figure the big secret of the movie because in each one had it's own mystery. I really don't know why. There have only been two updates in the last month! You guys are weird.

Lately we all have been watching Veronica Mars, which is basically a tv show about girl power and super-sleuthing. I'm not typically a fan of the detective genre, but this show really presents it in an appealing way. It rocks, and I heartily recommend it to anybody that enjoys TV. (Props to Andrea and Susie, because they have both been bugging us guys to watch it for months now).

Some people (me) have brought up the idea of putting videos online of us talking about movies and shows after we watch them. Other people (everybody else so far) has said that this is a silly idea, or that it goes against everything they stand for. It's not like we'll actually listen to your opinions, but you're free to leave a comment if you think that would be an interesting thing to watch.

Blades of Glory

Ok... so you might not think a very good movie, right? Wrong!! Well it's not going to win awards or anything but it made me laugh really hard. Kind of like waiting not a great movie but still you can't help but laugh when you see them get the goat or the batwing:D Well blades of glory is full of that over the top silly humour. It's a about two figure skaters start out as enemies and get strip of thier gold medals. When they got in a fight over tieing in the worlds. They're banned from men's single competition. Presently, however, they've found a loophole that will allow them to qualify as a pairs team. So they become the first male figure skating pair both Will Ferrell and Jon Heder do a awesome job and they have great comedic chemistry and i would like to see them in more picutres together. I give it *** and this thing ~@~ out of 7 that's how greta it is:D I recomend if you have nothing better to do pick up this film and watch it!

Man of Prestige Stranger Than Flushing

Know how sometimes you see a bunch of movies in short succession and they start to blur together? In the interests of preventing that, I'll summarize and write a mini commentary on each of the four movies I've seen in the last two days.

Stranger Than Fiction (imdb.com)
The story of a man who one day begins to hear a woman's voice narrating his life, but with a better vocabulary. At first he thinks he is going crazy, then tries to figure out what kind of story he is in and whether he is control of his own destiny.

The trailers I saw for this film set my expectations high, and I'm glad to say that surpassed those expectations. I admit, the special effects in the beginning hooked me right from the start. Who knew lines could be so pretty? I found the rest of the film to be thoroughly entertaining and just deep enough to keep me thinking without falling asleep.

This is a #1 rated rental for a reason - go rent it, especially if you are a fan of literature or ever spend time pondering about fate and destiny.

The Prestige (imdb.com)
"Robert and Alfred are rival magicians. When Alfred performs the ultimate magic trick, Robert tries desperately to find out the secret to the trick." - imdb.com

It turns out that the movie really is almost entirely about these two magicians, with a couple appearances by wacky old Nikola Tesla. While not quite what I was expecting, I must say that I was fabulously impressed. The plot was deeply intruiging, and may perhaps warrant watching again just to extract the subtler details. If you like plot twists, you'll love this.

The Prestige is definitely a thinking movie, so make sure you're awake for this one. If you're serious at all about movies, this is a must-see.

Flushed Away (imdb.com)
"The story of an uptown rat that gets flushed down the toilet from his penthouse apartment, ending in the sewers of London, where he has to learn a whole new and different way of life." - imdb.com

Whatever, this is an incredibly silly movie in the vein of Shrek 1 and 2. It makes fun of pop culture over and over again, is filled with characters both lovable and hatable, and tells the age old story of somebody struggling to find their home in a fresh new way.

If you're looking for a movie to watch with kids, this is a winner. It would probably do okay as a date movie, too.

Man of the Year (imdb.com)
Robin Williams plays a comedian (NO WAI!) who, by suggestion of the audience, runs for president and ends up getting elected, leading to further wacky hijinx. Think: presidential paintball!

This is a great comedy suitable for the whole family that employs exactly right amount of political satire. The first half of the movie really grabbed me, but the second half kind of seemed to dry up.

If you're a fan of Robin Williams, or if you're looking for a political comedy, watch this. I don't think it's a classic, though.

To all interested parties

I was at my parent's house last night. I believe I suggested she should be violated in a most unpleasant way. I am here to eat my words and offer that she may slap me in the face. Or at least her spirit can, seeing as she's been dead for over half a century.

The most important thing to keep in mind when reading Mrs. Dalloway is that it is essentially a poem that happens to be in prose form. As such, she completely disregards all rules of punctuation, or sentence structure, or really, any structure at all. It is more like the character's brains were drained directly onto the paper, without any attempt at cleaning it up.

Although this annoyed me to no end to begin with, once I got over my grammar snobbery, I found the style absolutely brilliant at creating fabulously detailed characters with compelling and complex relationships between them. Although the plot of the novel is (no joke) "Mrs. Dalloway gets ready for a party. Then she has one," I got chills on the last page. They were not because of some abrupt plot twist, because that would have required a plot to twist. It was because of the sheer beauty of the world she created and the people in it.

So, overall I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to try something very different. It's not like anything I've ever read before. It is Mrs. Dalloway

For there she was.

Clerks II: A real review

I wasn't GOING to post a review of Clerks II, but since Nic went ahead and did it, I can't very well let him win, now can I?

I liked Clerks II much better than anyone else who watched it with me. I might even go so far as to say I liked it better than the original, although that's not a fair comparison, since I saw it over a decade after it was originally released and all of the good parts had been ruined for me.

I thought Clerks II had a lot of very interesting things to say, all of which were said very well. I especially enjoyed the "porch monkey" discussion, although it DID go on a bit longer than strictly necessary. All of the commentary on the minutiae of pop culture was there from the first one, all of which made me very happy.

I also enjoyed the addition of Elias. The actor who played him was incredibly talented and his LOTR fanboyism was a brilliant counter-point to Randall's Star Wars fanaticism.

The decision to go with colour was one I'm not sure I agree with, but Kevin Smith certainly knows how to use it, so I accepted it. The film was beautifully shot. Not the super-stylized beautiful of an asian martial arts film, but a sort of understated beautiful that simply underlined and supported the action.

As to Nic's statements about the jokes lagging on for too long, I didn't exactly find that to be true. Although often discussions or jokes would go on much longer than a conventional film, I feel that it was very important to do so to create a mood. As to the idea that the editing got snappier as the film went along, that's not true at all. By the end, we were just used to it. The donkey bit at the end lasted for about a million minutes, but was entertaining the whole way through.

So, overall, Clerks II was a highly enjoyable film. If you enjoyed the first Clerks, I would say you'll like Clerks II. Perhaps ever love it. It's a highly entertaining movie, but its not the sort of thing I need to see again and again. I give it 8/10.

New Years Party

We're having a new years party here tomorrow! Daniel had lots of comments but didn't feel the movie was "good enough" to earn the place as the inaugural post for this blog. I think that's a silly notion and I'm going to write a review, albeit a short one because I don't have that many comments and it's late.

The beginning of the movie started out slow and was frankly annoying to watch. Some of the jokes played on too long and the introduction was rather disorienting. The script started getting better about half way through, and even the editing seemed perkier. There were many parts of the movie that I'm sure some people would find deeply offensive, but I found to be rather tastlessly amusing. Overall, not as good as the first but still worth seeing.

"Clerks 2" gets a rank of 7/10 for a good effort and a unique plot with not too many aspects dragging it down.

First Post

Hello, and welcome to our blog. This is a place where the members of the guy's apartment (Daniel Yule, Nic Waller, and Cole Hewlett) will share things that are important to us. Things like film, or books. It's also a place where we'll post information about what's going on here. If we're having a party, all the information will be here. This is NOT, however, a personal blog. Those of us who are interested in having them already do, and you can access them through our profiles. So, for those of you who love reading blogs, here is yet another, updated from three sources, about things and stuff at the guy's apartment.

The different sorts of things we post about will be sorted by label. So, all our reviews will be under the label "review" If we're having a get-together, it'll be an "invitation." I don't really know what other labels there will be yet, but YOU should be able to see.
